Press release from CARITAS/CIDSE
Sudan Working Group:
At the
end of the wonderful meeting, the
SWG issued a press release for the
public and other stakeholders
We members of
CARITAS/CIDSE Sudan Working Group
met in Juba from 8th – 12th march
2009, with the representatives of
the Sudan Catholic Bishops National
and Regional Secretariats and
Diocesan representatives, prayed and
deliberated on issues of common
interest and efforts to accompany
the Catholic Church of Sudan in her
ministry.
We acknowledged the presence of the
Bishop President of Sudan Catholic
Bishop’s Conference and the Bishop
Chairman of the Finance Committee
and Justice & Peace Commission.
We also acknowledged the presence
of the Government representatives
from the Central Equatoria State and
their enormous contributions during
our meeting and the input they
offered.
This was the first meeting of the
CARITAS/CIDSE Sudan Working Group
inside Sudan after the signing of
the Comprehensive Peace Agreement,
and for the first time with the
participation of representatives of
all the Sudanese Catholic Dioceses.
We noted with concern the
challenges in the current situation
of the Country, in particular the
lack of implementation of some of
key protocols of the CPA, the on
going crisis in Darfur region and
the threat posed by Lord Resistance
Army to the population of Western
Equatoria State.
The meeting was inspired by the
value of partnership and the desire
to work together in line with the
spirit of the Social teaching of the
Catholic Church and in particular
the preferential option for the
poorest.
The meeting
gave us opportunities to acquaint
ourselves with the strategies and
the programs of the Sudanese
Catholic Church at the national,
regional and diocesan level in the
areas of:
- Peace & Justice
- Education
- Health
- Relief and Humanitarian Assistance
- Integral Human Development
During our deliberations we noted
that there is a very significant
constructive engagement of the
Sudanese Catholic Church in the
sectors mentioned above, but there
are still some challenges in the
areas of:
- Capacity to work effectively in
the long term,
- Organizational structure to
deliver appropriate services
- Communication and coordination
between the different Dioceses and
the linkages with the national and
regional secretariats.
Following the
rich and elaborate discussions, the
partners participating at the
Caritas/CIDSE Sudan Working Group,
confirmed their commitment to
support and accompany the Sudanese
Catholic Church to meet the above
mentioned challenges and achieve
their goals in the services to the
Sudanese population.
This land mark
meeting shall continue to remind us
as family of God to care for
humanity in a holistic manner.
